In 1975, The Carey Gardens Housing estate was built. Nick Wood was the architect who designed and built the estate. Nick’s aim was to create ‘council estate that do not look like council estate,’ designing structures that could provide an enjoyable living environment for its residents.

Nick applied Sir Leslie Martin’s theories on land use to design Carey Gardens estate and his model showed that it was possible to achieve high density with low-rise buildings, there’s a video which shows Nick’s creativity, making The Carey Gardens history an indelible one. During this period, his creativity was seen as revolutionary owing that high-rise blocks were seen as fashionable, but cost more to build.
